What It Takes to Secure Top Talent in Radiation Oncology
Insights from Professionals In The Field

In today’s competitive healthcare landscape, securing top Radiation Oncology professionals takes more than a job post. We’ve spoken directly with Oncology Professionals – Medical Physicists, Dosimetrists, and Radiation Therapists – across the country to understand what drives their decisions. Here’s what they shared:

Culture Is King

More than anything, they prioritize a healthy, collaborative team environment. Poor communication or toxic dynamics are deal-breakers. Facilities that promote respect and teamwork, especially across therapists, physicians, physicists, and dosimetrists, stand out. Seeing that displayed during the interview process allows them to see how collaborative the connections are within the team.

“I don’t want to jump from job to job. I’m looking for a good fit.”

Compensation That Reflects Reality

It’s no surprise that compensation is a major factor, but Professionals are quick to point out that it’s about more than just base salary. They are evaluating total compensation packages including healthcare benefits, paid time off, student loan assistance, 401(k) contributions, and cost-of-living adjustments.

“Does the salary, benefits, and time off make sense for the cost of living and hours worked?” one Therapist asked. “It needs to feel fair and sustainable.”

New graduates are especially motivated by loan repayment options and employer-paid continuing education. One graduate accepted a role largely because it included a $16,000 sign-on bonus and $400/month student loan repayment from day one, calling it “not a hard decision in the end.”

Location Still Matters

Commute time and proximity to home remain important, though many are open to relocation for the right fit. Virtual meet-and-greets or relocation site visits can help ease uncertainty. Financial assurance of these moves is high on the list. Customizing these trips based upon the Professional’s interests can ensure they get the best perspective of what the area and the opportunity has to offer them.

Framing a move as a lifestyle upgrade can be persuasive.

Flexibility and Work-Life Balance

Professionals want consistent schedules, supportive teams, and perks like childcare stipends or growth-based raises. Work-life balance is key to retention.

“Childcare reimbursement would be a great incentive for therapists with families.”

Growth and Advancement

Top talent wants to grow. Whether it’s on-the-job training or a clear path to advancement, opportunities to develop are highly valued.  Supporting their continuing education requirements or sponsoring them for an annual conference to stay on top of the latest in the field is what all Professionals are seeking.

Student Insights: What Future Employees Value Most

Recent input from graduates across all disciplines – Medical Physics, Dosimetry and Radiation Therapy – echoed these same themes. Across several graduating classes, students ranked team culture, location, and benefits as their top priorities in choosing a future employer.

“Team culture is huge; how the team meshes, treats patients, and supports one another really matters,” one student shared.
Another added, “A great benefits package, flexible shifts, and a clinic that respects work-life balance, that’s what I’m looking for.”

Final Thoughts

Success in recruitment depends on more than just strong offers, it’s about being transparent, human, and proactive. Listening to Professionals and building relationships from the start can make all the difference.
