October 2006 NBAA Annual Meeting and Convention
By Leahna Wenger
In October 2006, the Deacon Recruiting Aviation Team attended the 59th Annual Meeting and Convention of the National Business Aviation Association, Inc. (NBAA) in Orlando, FL. As active members of the San Antonio Area Business Aviation Alliance (SAABAA), this event marked the culmination of hard work and dedication the Aviation Division of Deacon Recruiting had put forth since its inception earlier that year.
After setting up their booth space the team - led by Joseph Alai, Aviation Division Director - was poised to meet and greet the more than 33,088 attendees. With the entire floor of the Orlando Convention Center sold out, the team had their work cut out for them! There were 1,140 exhibitors in addition to the 11 fixed wing aircraft and four helicopters! The Orlando Executive Airport offered 115 static display aircraft for attendees to view. The team was joined by Ann Bohl Deacon, Abigail Erwin, and Brooke Miceli. NBAA2006 broke all previous attendance records by 14%!
Abigail Erwin assisted in explaining to the myriad of clients and candidates that Deacon Recruiting is a full-service executive placement firm with a passion for Aviation! The team members in attendance pointed out that The Aviation Division specializes in sourcing, screening and placing top tier aviation professionals in the aviation industry. They further explained that with their strong network, in- depth technical knowledge and innate ability to identify the unidentifiable, the Deacon Aviation Team is unmatched in the direct-hire arena!
The Deacon Recruiting Team had met well over 500 people, which further served to strengthen their broadening network of Aviation professionals. They plan on attending the 60th Annual Meeting and Convention set for September 25 - 27 in Atlanta, GA which is slated to be another record-breaking event!
The NBAA is the leading organization for companies that rely on general aviation aircraft to help make their businesses more efficient, productive and successful. The Association represents more than 7,000 Member Companies and provides more than 100 products and services to the business aviation community, including the NBAA Annual Meeting & Convention, the world's largest civil aviation trade show. September 19, 2006 Management Style 101: “Ask for Permission or Forgiveness”?
Does your supervisor prefer to be asked permission before you carry out that new idea? Or, would they rather you venture out and, if you fail, ask for forgiveness? Understanding your Supervisor’s management style, short and long term expectations, stress triggers, and coping tactics are vital to an effective, productive, and healthy working relationship. Everyone is different. Pinpointing these important factors can minimize interoffice miscommunication, disagreements, and stress.
Over the past five years recruiting and consulting Professionals about their careers, I have witnessed a reoccurring issue of employees leaving their employment due to incompatibility with their Supervisor. “It just wasn’t a personality fit”, is a common remark. A viable excuse for not waking up with positive anticipation and excitement for the workday ahead, but not irresolvable. There are ways to overcome this obstacle…patience, practice, and a keen perception into management style. Remember, this is your $LIVELIHOOD$!
Learning to identify, manage, adapt to, and react positively to stress and bad energy (a.k.a. bad “juju”) will allow you to remain productive in an ever-changing working environment and will reveal your true Leadership skills. Hiring Authorities are searching for that Professional who can adjust to the many inter/outer office personalities, a Professional who’s flexibility allows them to hit the ground running, keep running with the flow of the work place, and get the job done! Showing your Supervisor that you are committed to both your success and their success, that you are a Team Player can lead you down the fast track to promotion.
So bite your tongue the next time you’re not given due credit for a job well done or you are reprimanded in a negative manner. Stop, analyze the situation, and turn that negativity into positive production. Keep in mind that Supervisors are just like you and me with good and bad days. While becoming best friends and sharing weekend barbecues with your Supervisor is not a requirement, following their direction in the office and learning to be productive regardless of their management style will make going to work and achieving success easier and more enjoyable. Let’s face it, the majority of our time is spent at our place of work, making it a must to get along effectively with the people we work with everyday. You choose your friends, not your Boss! Now, get back to work and make it a great day!

March 30, 2006 Panelists Discuss the Prospects for Professional Women
In recognition of Women's History Month, the UTSA College of Business hosted a panel March 30 titled “Glass Ceiling or Broken Barriers?: Prospects for Professional Women at the Start of the 21st Century.” Panelists were Ann Bohl Deacon, founder and CEO of Deacon Recruiting; Dr. Denise Dimon, director of the Ahlers Center for International Business at the University of San Diego; and Dr. Lynda de la Viña, dean of the UTSA College of Business. The panel was moderated by Dr. Victoria Jones, director of the Business Studies for the Americas program in the College of Business.
Dimon opened the discussion by presenting statistics on women's career status in the United States and internationally. She cited that research shows that perceived differences in men and women emerge in relation to leadership styles, competitiveness and communication skills. “As the world of business becomes more globally focused, this will allow even greater opportunities for women in business,” said Dimon.
De la Viña shared with the audience of over 200 students her strategies for success. Her career path has been shaped by developing a vision for success, a philosophy of balancing risk versus equity in life, understanding ones personal realities and formalizing a strategy to move forward. “The women of the 60's and 70's have set the stage for where we are today,” said de la Viña. “Be proud of what you've accomplished and remain steadfast in following your dreams.”
Bohl Deacon knew that she wanted to be an entrepreneur by the age of 10. “Entrepreneurship is a profession. The opportunities available to women are tremendous,” said Deacon. “Just this year seven percent of female entrepreneurs have million dollar companies.” Bohl Deacon encouraged students to define their goals, develop a strategic plan and find the drive to make it a reality.
Women's History Month events were coordinated by the UTSA Women's Studies Institute. http://business.utsa.edu/news/news_stories/2006/April06/women'shistory.htm
