Staying in Touch: New Grads & E-Mail

We all know that the #1 Rule of any job search is:  “Timing is Everything!”  And that’s no truer for any segment of the job market than new graduates.  As Recruiters, we absolutely want to help new graduates get established in their careers and are especially excited when we help them get that first job in their professional field.

We get resumes from new graduates every week, but we don’t have always have a search under way that will consider a new grad.  That can change at any time, and we always want to get the word out as quickly as possible when we get one.  The most efficicient way to do that these days is by email, and we’re diligent in our efforts to keep our email database as current as possible.

There is one thing that a new graduate can do that will be a big help to us in helping them: don’t give us only your student email address!  School email accounts typically are closed and inactivated 6 months or so after the student has graduated.  If that is the only email address we have for the candidate, we’re not able to stay in touch and alert them of new opportunities - their “perfect job” may come and go because we couldn’t find them!

In communicating with Recruiters and potential employers, all new grads should provide an email address from Yahoo, GMail, MSN, etc.,  – any provider that will follow them around the country and that they can continue to access wherever they go.
